What Is a Commercial Gas Safety Certificate?

A Commercial Gas Safety Certificate (CP42) confirms that your kitchen’s gas installation and appliances are safe for use. It is required by UK law for any business operating gas catering equipment, restaurants, cafés, takeaways, hotels, schools, canteens and production kitchens.

A Gas Safe engineer with relevant COMCAT qualifications inspects appliances (ranges, fryers, ovens, grills, combi ovens, water heaters), meters and pipework, flues/ducts, ventilation and the gas interlock to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. Certificates are valid for 12 months; you must renew annually to remain compliant. Without a current CP42, you risk fines, prosecution, invalid insurance and most importantly serious safety hazards. Holding a CP42 protects staff and customers and demonstrates a professional, safety-first operation.

Protect Your Business and Stay Compliant

Regular commercial gas checks prevent leaks, CO exposure and costly breakdowns. At Landlord Certifications we make compliance straightforward:

our engineer conducts the inspection, explains any defects in plain English, issues your CP42 the same day (where no dangerous faults are found) and provides a clear, priced plan for remedials if needed. Keeping your gas system safe protects people, keeps kitchens trading and satisfies insurers, landlords and environmental health officers.

Legal Requirements for commercial gas safety certificate

If your business uses gas appliances you must hold a current CP42 certificate, renewed every 12 months, under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. Only Gas Safe registered engineers can legally carry out the checks and issue certificates. The inspection covers appliances, pipework, safety devices, flues, ventilation and the interlock to ensure the gas supply shuts off if extraction fails.

These duties apply to restaurants, cafés, hotels, schools, care homes, shops, offices with catering areas and industrial units with catering equipment. Operating without a valid certificate can lead to fines, prosecution, enforced closure, invalidated insurance and significant safety risk. Keeping accurate records protects lives, reputation and business continuity.

What You Must Do to Stay Legally Compliant

To comply with commercial gas safety regulations, business owners must take several key steps. These measures ensure that gas systems remain safe, regularly inspected, and fully compliant with UK law. Neglecting any of them can result in serious penalties, heightened safety risks, and potential legal action. By staying on top of these requirements, you safeguard both your staff and your property.

Frequency of Inspections

Arrange a CP42 every 12 months (or sooner if equipment is altered, relocated or following engineer advice). Keep previous certificates for at least 2 years.

Qualified Personnel

Use a Gas Safe engineer with relevant COMCAT categories (e.g., COMCAT1–5). Ask to see their Gas Safe ID and check categories on the reverse.

Reporting

After checks you’ll receive a CP42 certificate listing the site, appliances, results and any Immediately Dangerous (ID) or At Risk (AR) findings. Unsafe equipment must be isolated until repaired.

Legal Obligations

Ensure ventilation, extraction and the gas interlock comply with BS 6173; provide safe access and manufacturer instructions; maintain CO alarms where required; keep records available for inspectors/insurers.

Documentation

Retain CP42s, maintenance records and remedial invoices. Display the latest certificate in the kitchen office/health & safety file and brief staff on emergency shut-off procedures.
